I just got out of the water from surfing for the first time in month. I know, that amount of time by itself is a crime for living in Costa Rica. I wish I could blame it on something keeping me from the waves, but the truth is that I’m always exhausted from the week of coaching and training, and rarely make getting to the surf a priority. Which led me to an amazing revelation today.
I need to surf more!
That sounds simple, but it’s not. It’s not difficult for the time, the distance, or the effort. I can make all of those happen without a problem. It’s difficult because I’m not making my happiness in the waves a priority.
As CrossFit athletes, we frequently place so much emphasis on what we can do in the box that we forget the real reason we’re there. As Glassman famously said in Fitnesss In 100 Words, “Regularly learn and play new sports.” Isn’t getting out of the box and participating in these sports and activities that make us happy really the point?
At the end of the day, most of us aren’t just picking up weights to become better at picking up weights. We’re doing it to become healthier, fitter, and more ready for what we do in life. So maybe all the ‘what we do in life’ should take a higher priority from time to time.
This also led me to realize one of the best effects of my training today. Even though I haven’t been on my board in months, I felt better than I had in years. My feeling on my board of balance, coordination, stability, and paddling strength were better than they have ever been! All of the general physical principals we practice in the box really do translate to the activities out of the box.
So what we do in the box makes us better for what we do out of the box. That’s always been the goal. But getting to everything outside the box still needs to happen. So the answer becomes SURF MORE!
How about you? Whats your activity or sport you love that you want to do more of?
